Good communication and trust-building ‘upwards management’ are, therefore, core skills of the cat herder and Chief Executive Officer. ‘No surprises’ is a good Golden Rule.

Another imperative is to keep a sense of perspective around values and ethics “when all about you are losing theirs”, sometimes no easy task in our highly competitive world, with ongoing pressure for ‘results’ – and, particularly, for bottom-line performance.

Confronted with almost daily examples of how badly people can behave in professional situations, you must be a role model for ethical behaviour. A strong vision is needed at high level to marry the demands for short-term results with the long-term ‘public good’.

Quality ethics is about marrying the short term with the long term. Whether it be pressure (temptation?) to manipulate accounts, or to turn a bit of a blind eye to pollution, instilling ethical behaviour demands longer-term thinking.

We need to ensure that short-term expediency is tempered by a clear view of long-term impacts. In the modern world, unethical behaviour will in due course be ‘outed’ and have repercussions.

There was a celebrated judgement, a while back, around a failed major, national, financial institution where the presiding judge remarked: “I found myself rhetorically asking: did anyone stand back and ask themselves the simple question ‘is this right?’”
